“The weird thing about those advertisements (raising money for charity) is that make you think that the poor are in some way fundamentally different from US, that THEY are a THEM. So in our minds, it becomes this formulation: WE should help THEM. But it’s not a THEM problem, it’s an US problem. WE need to help US. Poverty isn’t about THEM, it’s about US. There is no THEM. There are only facets of US. They may not know ‘your mom’ jokes, they may not speak English, they may not have high speed internet, but they’re still part of US.”
None of this is a matter of principle or asceticism; it’s just pure selfishness. Nothing makes me feel better — calmer, clearer and happier — than being in one place, absorbed in a book, a conversation, a piece of music. It’s actually something deeper than mere happiness: it’s joy, which the monk David Steindl-Rast describes as “that kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens.”
I swear, my dad could have written this article himself! Haha. “That kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens” —-A wish and a resolution I am making for myself this new year. (:
“No matter how well you play, at some point you’re going to find yourself stuck in the waters, the roughs or the bunker and you’ll have no choice but still take the shot cos that’s how the game works.”
I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. -Philippians 4:12-13
This was part of the second reading during the mass. <3. What a thing for Paul to say!
This came out in 2005. Same year I graduated from college. I would watch it every so often, since then and needless to say, it has gotten me through some really tough times. So today, as is the rest of the world, let me thank you, Mr. Steve Jobs. For more than the gadgets. Your wisdom and your attitude towards the world continues to leave me speechless. You will always be an inspiration.
“Most days of the year are unremarkable. They begin, and they end, with no lasting memories made in between. Most days have no impact on the course of a life. May 23rd was a Wednesday.”
